(disclaimer: this is a heavily opinionated rant filled talk about things i dislike about television. the opinions i state here are not fact and though i might state them as such they are not. i appreciate everyone opinions but lets keep it to opinions and not flames. lastly i make no claim to know what im talking about, and though i might decide to do a little research do not expect it every time, in other words this is almost completely opinion based. if your looking for history or facts you will probably be sorely disappointed.)
television has been around for a very long time, and though I obviously never saw the beginning i can say for certain that television as you knew it is dead. that is to say that television has changed a lot over the last few decades and what television is now was only a dream to someone back then. though television as a whole is not dead, but like radio it is my belief that it is dying, soon to be replaced by other forms of media more suited for people of the future (or present) . as of right now everything that you can get on your television can be gotten from other places, namely your computer. save for maybe playing your consoles but even that I'm sure can be done.
it is of course easy for me to say that television is dead, i haven't used television in length for a long time, not even to play my consoles. i have a very nice big screen TV in my room that just sits there and gathers dust. my computer is my main source of entertainment and it brings me everything that a television would plus more. but honestly why? what makes the computer so much more then the television? the content. now don't get me wrong the internet probably encompasses more stupid shit then not. It's the fact that i don't have to listen to that, i don't even have to know it exists! As far as I'm concerned i can sit here quietly playing with my stupid shit while all the other stupid shit festers. with television even that which i once knew and loved has been bastardized to an extent that makes me cock an eyebrow. don't believe me? here lets talk about the three channels i used to watch, and why they no longer are what i loved.
cartoon network:
this was probably one of the first channels i actually really liked. it was my channel as far as i was concerned. i never liked Nickelodeon, because for every good show they had they had two over the top shows and two really boring ones, and Disney has kinda always been one big meh. but cartoon network? looney toons, Tom and Jerry, great classic cartoons flanked by at the very least decent new ones. though not every cartoon was awesome (never was a fan of ed, edd and eddy or jonny bravo now that i think about it, though ill get into why later) there was barely a reason to stop watching.
now, well just turn it on and look at the line up. I'm not going to say that everything that cartoon network has on right now is complete shit but UGH! ok i just watched a sample of the newer shows and i just don't get it. they seem to remind me of family guy, (least the funny ones) the jokes are hit and miss but the rest of the show is not only confusing, over the top, but stupid and pointless. the art style on these shows seems to have this sense of "i don't know what i want to be, so I'm just going to be random". I've said this once and I'll say it again RANDOM ISNT FUNNY! its RANDOM, random CAN be funny. but if random is normal its no longer interesting. its like constantly pushing the envelope, you overuse it and make it the norm, by making pushing the envelope the norm you make the entire act of pushing the envelope boring (now replace every instance of "pushing the envelope" with "random" and you got the idea).
also its not cartoon network anymore, its CN. whats that mean? they also have live action shows on, that happens with most every channel, just look at science fiction channel, it starts out dedicated but after a while they just start to do whatever. the last really good show on this channel was fosters home for imaginary friends.
G4:
this was the gamers channel, every show was dedicated to something that has to do with video games. a lot of review/preview shows but there was still quite a few really good shows on there, icons was my favorite, they took a subject and told you from the beginning to end about that thing. at first i wasn't a huge fan of X-play, but i started really liking it and honestly its a great show.
now? well remember how i said that every dedicated channel kind of dilutes after a while well... attack of the show, cops, cheaters, and ninja warrior. its not even G4 any more now its g4/tech TV (and i honestly think the only thing that's g4 anymore is X-play, whenever the hell that comes on) now dont get me wrong i love ninja warrior, that's an excellent show. but attack of the show is heavily over rated and honestly the only good part about that is the feed, everything else is just stupidity disguised as information. don't even get me started on all the shitty reality television they have. cheaters is quite possibly one of the most despicable, pathetic grabs for attention i have ever seen, and whoever honestly thought it was a good idea should be shot.
this channel has nothing to do with games anymore, gamers tv no longer exists. may G4 rest in peace.
comedy central:
why did i love this one... stand up, don't get me wrong some of the other original shows they had were pretty good but stand up comedy is amazing, and comedy central had a bunch of shows dedicated to stand up comedy, and every time they got up on stage you knew you were going to laugh. honestly comedy central was a non stop laugh fest, and though i wasn't the hugest fan of everything they had on i knew it was all good.
shitty comedy movies, and reno 911. the weirdest thing is that this channel is probably the least changed out of all of them, they still have stand up (from what i remember only on Fridays) they still have south park and the daily show. they also have crap like reno 911, i watched it when it first came out, and even then i wasn't impressed, the whole staging reality television is a paradox of stupidity. the point of reality TV is to cut the cost of acters by replacing them with every day Joes, sure its quality is bad but at least its cheap. staging reality television (again im going to get into this a bit later as well) basically keeps all the quality of reality TV but adds in the paid actors thing... doesn't that defeat the purpose of reality TV?
also the entire channel is shitty comedies now seriously you turn that channel on and 9 times out of ten its going to be a shitty comedy. yeah yeah yeah matter of openion but i never found much any of them interesting, of course your going to have something on someone likes, but then you have the rest of the boring crap that nobody likes. That's what i usually see on at any given time, and when you go to wild 94.9 expecting wild 94.9 but getting star 101.3 your going to be disappointed even if you actually liked star 101.3. what i mean is if your looking for stand up but getting a movie? you get my point.
also im going to say this once, I've never been a fan of south park. i know i know HOW DARE YOU! honestly i think it just has to do with the fact that they always have controversial episodes on there, like almost every episode has to do with at least a slightly touchy subject. so you never know when your going to be enraged about how bullshit they portray something. plus i just never really get to watch it ^_^;
these three channels have changed a lot sense i first watched them, i think for the worse. but this isn't the only reason why television is crap now. in fact this is only the tip of the metaphorical iceberg. in fact this is just the intro into more ranting. i intend to take the three aspects i think are the biggest reasons why television is failing and give a bit more of a detailed reason as to why.
the first one I'm going to say on a broader spectrum is just random shit, on a more pinpointed idea, its adult swim. i will be talking about how adult swim cant create a good original show to save their lives and the only things that have ever been good on there were either from another network or another country.
the second is sitcoms, i will explore into the void of though that are sitcoms and atempt to come out sane long enough to tell you why they couldn't come up with a good story with guns to their heads.
and last but defiantly not least reality television, here we walk into the television zone that is completely devoid of quality and attempt to not gouge our eyes out in disgust. also fake reality television and again why its even worse then real reality television (how that's possible don't ask me)
so tune in next week when we take a dive into adult swim, and find out just why that joke is generally more funny then anything they can come up with.
(also forgive my spelling and grammer errors, i re read it and there are quite a few edits i would make
