Summer Breeze
Julian the fox looked forward to the warm weather months all year as times when he could free his footpaws from boxy, confining shoes and luxuriate in the simple pleasures of sandals. He slipped into a well-worn Italian pair with a cushioned suede footbed, his toes fitting readily into the deep impressions that the suede had molded itself into with frequent use. Keeping his footpaws cool and exposed to best advantage, wearing these babies was almost as good as going barepaw.
The pool wasn't that crowded that day except for one cat lounging about by the deep end. Julian nodded at him and eased down the pool ladder, enjoying the comforting embrace of the warm, sun-heated water. He paddled down to the deep end of the pool near where the cat was stretched out on a lounge chair, and ascended another ladder, the water dripping from his thick fur and his swim trunks clinging tightly to the features of his male anatomy as he did so.
Although the cat was wearing sunglasses, Julian thought that he appreciated his show by a slight flicking of his tail that he saw. Still dripping, Julian dried himself off with a towel, the cat dropping his shades slightly and a faint smile involuntarily crossing his face. The sun was behind Julian, and it shown through his fur, making him from the cat's perspective look like he was on surrounded by a fiery corona. The cat's tail tip continued to flick.
No guts, no glory, thought Julian as he approached the cat. Still toweling himself, he made eye contact with the feline, gave a friendly nod, and ventured "Are there always so few folks out here?"
"Nah," replied the cat. "It's just that things really drop off at the pool once school reopens."
"Well, I can live with that!," replied Julian. "I kind of like an adult swim, anyways. May I join you?," asked the fox, gesturing to an empty chaise lounge chair next to the cat. "Name's Julian."
"Sure!," consented the cat, stretching slightly and spreading his toes. "I'm Roofshadow," he responded. As he extended a paw to shake with Julian, the cat's flip-flop fell off his hindpaw.
"Let me get that for you since I'm up," offered the fox, kneeling as he bent low to retrieve the flip-flop. He found himself at eye level with Roofshadow's hindpaw. Grinning involuntarily, Julian fitted the well-worn flip-flop back upon the cat's hindpaw, his sensitive muzzle enjoying the faint, musky scent of the cat's paw as as he did so. Julian stroked the top of the cat's paw upon putting the flip-flop upon it.--And did his ear deceive him?--Was the cat purring?
"Oh yes, that feels so nice!," purred the cat. "I do so enjoy a good hindpaw massage! Please continue, if you've a mind to," added Roofshadow with a wink.
Julian needed no encouragement. Remaining on his knees, he kneaded and massaged the cat's paws, working the pad and then each toe individually. "I always like to clean up after my work," Julian added mischievously, licking each toe and the space between each delicately.
Roofshadow stretched and purred loudly and looked at the fox with his eyes half closed in pleasure. "Very nice indeed!," said the appreciative cat. "Now if you care to join me in the clubhouse, perhaps we can find other things to rub that feel even more pleasant!"
Julian required no encouragement and rose to follow the sensuous cat indoors, where an even more pleasant afternoon followed their magical morning...
